General Information

Selection for NSW Government positions is based on merit. This means that the person whose skills, knowledge and experience best match the job requirements will be selected.

The job advertisement gives you basic information so it is so it is important to obtain the information package You can usually download the download the package from the jobs.nsw advertisement or you can contact the inquiries person named in the advertisement who can send you a copy. Documents in the package usually include a job description and organisational chart. This will help you with your application.

It is important to prepare a good application to get an interview. Your application will typically include your Claim for the Position, your resume and an application form. Your 'Claim for the Position' is the most important part of the application and is where you must shows why you are the best person for the job and how your skills, knowledge, personal qualities and experience match the selection criteria. Through the application process on jobs.nsw, the system will guide you through responding to the position's selection criterion where you should describe your skills, knowledge personal qualities and experience and how you can use them in the job.

Please be aware that any statement on your application that is found to be deliberately misleading could make you, if employed, liable to dismissal.

The Selection, Interview and Appointment Process

A selection panel will assess each of the applications received for a job against the selection criteria. Applicants who best meet the selection criteria will be called for further assessment. The selection committee may use a number of methods to assess your ability to do the job including: interview questions, work samples, tests and referee and records checks.

For specific Information about a role, the Inquiries Officer (named on the advertisement) can provide more information. They can also help if you have any requirements for the interview (eg mobility access, or interpreter for hearing impaired people).

Referee Checks - The selection panel will phone your referees if you are one of the best applicants interviewed for the job. Your nominated referees should be able to comment on your recent work performance. The selection panel will ask your referees to comment on your work behaviour and performance and can be asked to verify or comment on claims made by you.

Criminal Records Check - The NSW Government requires that a criminal record check be carried out on applicants recommended for some positions. If a criminal records check is required for a position, you will be asked to confirm that you agree to the check and to provide your date and place of birth. A criminal records check does not necessarily disqualify you from selection. You will be given the opportunity to discuss the matter before any final decision is made about your selection.

Working with Children Check - For some positions a Working with Children check will also be undertaken of applicants. This is a formal process of checks to help determine your suitability to work with children or have unsupervised access to children in your work. The check takes into account relevant criminal records, relevant apprehended violence orders and relevant completed disciplinary proceedings. It is an offence under the NSW Child Protection (Prohibited Employment) Act 1998 for a person convicted of a serious sex offence to apply for a child–related position.

Verification of Professional and/or Academic Qualifications - Advertisements will indicate if qualifications, registrations, licenses, or membership to a professional association are required for you to be considered for the role. If you have an overseas qualification, assessment for Australian equivalency should be completed prior to applying for these jobs

To be permanently appointed in the NSW Government you need to satisfy all of the following conditions:

Step 1: Application form

Most of the information on this form will have been completed for you by jobs.nsw. The information will be taken from the selected job advertisement and from your own registration details. If any of this information is incorrect, you will need to return to the previous screen to either select a different job, or click on EDIT MY DETAILS at the top of the screen to change the information stored about yourself.

REMEMBER THAT, WHEN YOU REGISTER, THE INFORMATION WILL BE DISPLAYED ON YOUR APPLICATION FOR THE JOB, EXACTLY AS YOU HAVE ENTERED IT, eg: jane smith or Jane Smith.

At the bottom of the screen, there are two areas where you must input information before proceeding. jobs.nsw will not accept blanks in these fields. The fields relate to whether or not you are currently employed in the NSW Government.

Step 2: Claim for the position

It is strongly recommended that you respond to each of the selection criteria so that you maximise your chances of obtaining an interview for the position.

The final three options, ie employment history, education details and referees may be included either here or in your resume.

Your information can be either typed directly into jobs.nsw or copied and pasted from another document.

Step 3: Attach resume and other documents

You can attach as many documents here as you wish, but there is a size limit of 250kb which is about 12-15 pages of moderately formatted text, for each document.

The documents attached here will be linked to your application form and claim for the position, before being downloaded by the employing agency. Your receipt will itemise all attached documents.

Step 4: Save your application

In this step, you can save your application so that it can be reviewed or completed at a later date.

If you do not proceed to submit your application, it will be automatically deleted from jobs.nsw eight (8) weeks after the closing date for the job advertisement.

In this stage you can also review your application by clicking on the PREVIEW button. At this point you can print your application or highlight and use Ctrl/C to copy and save.

Note that until your application is submitted, it will not be available for download by the employing agency.

Step 5: Submitting your application

When you are satisfied that you have written your best application, and have attached all the documents required, proceed to submit your application, before the closing date.

Once you have completed the SUBMIT function, you can no longer change anything contained in it, and the employing agency will have access to it.

You will be provided with an immediate receipt upon submission of the application. It is strongly recommended that you save or print the receipt so that you have the full details of the job and your application.

Please note: the receipt DOES NOT contain any of the documents included in your application.

After submission, if you need to make any enquiries about the recruitment process for this particular job, or about your application, please contact the person indicated on your receipt as the contact for the position.

After attaching your offline Claim for the Position, it will be linked to your application form, and submitted together with any subsequently attached documents such as your resume.

Please remember to download or print the job advertisement to assist in the writing of your Claim for the Position.

It is strongly recommended that you respond to each of the selection criteria so that you maximise your chances of obtaining an interview for the position.

If you are unable to apply online you can send your application by email, mail or fax. You should read the information under General Information and The Interview and Selection Process located at the top of this page before writing your application. The job advertisement gives you basic information so it is important to obtain the information package.

You must submit a 'claim for the position', resume and completed application form. It is strongly recommended that you respond to each of the selection criteria so that you maximise your chances of obtaining an interview for the position. Your ‘claim for the position’ is the most important part of the application. To write this, you should make a separate heading for each selection criterion and describe your skills, knowledge and experience and how they could be used in the job. A brief covering letter is optional.

Your application should be stapled with copies of qualifications etc (not originals). Send your application to the address shown in the advertisement by the closing date.
