Why did you become a bus driver?

I have always wanted to drive a large vehicle, particularly a bus and so, after a few career changes, I joined Sydney Buses. I consider it a challenge and it is interesting to drive a large vehicle everyday.

What do you like about your job?

I have done a variety of different things since joining Sydney Buses. I took the CEO of Sydney Buses and the Minister for Transport on the first run of the Free CBD Shuttle bus (555). I was an Ambassador for the prepay system when it started and spent several days in the city explaining the prepay idea. I have also taken a film crew out in my bus while they were shooting advertisements, so there is a lot of variety to be had. I meet all types of interesting people each day. I have made great mates through my work and I enjoy what I do. I have fun and get a great sense of enjoyment from my job. There is great training provided and lots of opportunities for variety and promotion.

An average day:

I work a broken shift. I work mornings and get the middle of the day off before going back on shift to do the afternoon run. Every shift is about 4 hours and involves a different run where I drive different streets and meet new people. There are over 42 different runs done by Sydney Buses.

What do you believe makes a good bus driver?

You have to be friendly and cheerful, have good communication and listening skills, and enjoy the company of people. Most importantly, you need to be prepared to do your best. Have fun and have the right attitude. It also helps to be a good driver!
